MEET VIENNA
THE SANDWICH SHOP
RESTAURATEURS:
We can't get enough of The Sandwich Shop - the food, the atmosphere, the beers on tap, the beautiful patio with the view of historic Church Street. The Sandwich Shop is a down to earth lunch and dinner eatery, with carefully curated sandwiches that gain tasteful inspiration from classic American favorites like the famed Philly Cheesesteak and a flare of fusion like the Korean BBQ sandwich with Kimchi.  Mike Yi and his staff bring a warm and inviting atmosphere and offer a balanced variety of food with some surprising and inventive ingredients.  This open concept bar and grill, with its couple of communal-style indoor picnic tables and outdoor seating area provide a great place to grab a bite with some friends and family and just spend some time.

Why Vienna?

We love Vienna and I would love it if my family could move here in the near future.  It took a couple months for the business to get its foundation, but once we did, we encountered a community that is loyal, and involved.  I had so much help from owners of other businesses in the community like Caffe Amouri and Social Burger - it's been a great place to be.

What's one memorable experience that you've had since opening?
Honestly, it's been everyone's feedback about their experience here - I know that's not one experience, but i just love how people in this community really care and stay engaged with what we're doing here.

What's been your personal journey in opening The Sandwich Shop?

I was born and raised in Maryland, and went to undergrad at University of Maryland College Park.  After I graduated, I worked in a corporate job, and moved out to Los Angeles.  But, after 2 years, I decided to swap the corporate gig for an education in culinary arts.  A couple years later I found myself back in this area as a cook, and I eventually opened up my own place in Fairfax, but when I saw that this location was up for sale, I jumped on the opportunity.

What's the concept?
We are your local sandwich shop - our goal is to surprise customers who walk in expecting lunch but leave with a food experience that surpasses expectations.  Our development process is really customer-centric.  I really listen to my customers and when something on the menu just isn't working we take it off and try something else.  We also want to appeal to every age group - we don't want it to feel too trendy - where only a younger crowd can hang out, but at the same time we do want young people to enjoy their experience here.
OUR CUSTOMERS ARE DIVERSE, AND WE REALLY WANT EVERYONE IN THE COMMUNITY TO FEEL WELCOMED.
